Google I/O 2023 unveiled new AI features that will transform how we use Google.

On May 10, 2023, Google announced the launch of its AI features at the Google I/O 2023 event. At this event, Google focused on enhancing the digital experience for users worldwide.

Since AI began playing a significant role in our online world, Google has dedicated itself for the past 7 years as an AI-first company. Currently, Google is adding new features that leverage AI to make it even more convenient for everyone, representing a further step forward. These new features include:

“Help me write” in Gmail

In 2017, Google launched Smart Reply, an AI feature that allows users to select short replies with a single click. This was followed by the introduction of Smart Compose, a feature that provides writing suggestions while typing. This feature became incredibly popular, with over 180 billion uses in the workspace in the past year alone.

And this year, the Google launched Help me write, a more powerful AI creative feature. Simply type in the keywords you need and press create, and a completed draft will appear. This feature will pull details from previous emails to meet your needs. Of course, you may need to adjust the wording and add some rewriting. In the future, this feature will be further developed by the Google and become part of the Workspace update, and will undoubtedly be as popular as the Smart Compose feature.

New Immersive View for travel routes in Maps.

Since the launch of the Google Street View, which uses AI to stitch together billions of panoramic images to allow users to explore the world virtually, the Google has continuously developed and updated many of its AI features. For example, at last year's I/O event, the Google unveiled Immersive View, which uses AI to create virtual representations of places, allowing users to experience those locations before they travel there.

This year, the Google has developed this feature to provide users with the best possible Maps experience. Google Maps displays 20 billion kilometers of route, allowing users to easily see their entire journey in advance. The Immersive View feature lets users choose their preferred route and also displays additional information such as traffic and weather.

This feature will initially roll out around summer in 15 cities, including London, New York, Tokyo, and San Francisco, by the end of the year before expanding globally.

A new Magic Editor experience in the Photos app.

In 2015, Google launched Google Photos, one of the first AI-native products that allowed users to search for things within photos, such as people, sunsets, or waterfalls, using machine learning. Furthermore, Google recognized that over 1.7 billion images were edited monthly within Google Photos, leading them to introduce Magic Eraser, first introduced in Pixel phones, a feature that uses AI-powered computational photography to remove unwanted distractions. This feature was further developed into Magic Editor, which can automatically recreate desired compositions.

PaLM 2 and Gemini

Last April, Google launched PaLM, an artificial intelligence model developed to understand language and stories in various contexts, and to be able to interact with people, similar to Open AI's GPT model.

At the recent Google I/O 2023 event, PaLM 2 was launched, a model capable of writing and decoding code in popular programming languages like Python and JavaScript, as well as specialized code in languages such as Prolog, Fortran, and Verilog. Furthermore, it expands language learning to cover 100 languages and improves its ability to understand, create, and translate significant texts such as idioms, poems, and puzzles in various languages. In addition, Google also developed the next-generation Gemini model for even greater performance.

Bard chatbot adds tons of new languages and features.

Google announced that its Bard chatbot is expanding its learning capabilities to languages beyond English. Currently, Bard is available in Korean and Japanese, and in the future, it will expand support to 40 more popular languages and eventually reach 180 languages worldwide.

In addition, Bard also provides image-based conversation display, pulling images from the Google Images Search. This means Bard can send images instead of text replies. Besides displaying images, we can also create image prompts in Bard by taking photos with the Google Lens.

Previously, Bard might not have been as good as ChatGPT in terms of coding, so Google has upgraded it by adding more accurate code source references, a dark mode for better eye comfort, and a button to export code to Replit (a programming website). Furthermore, Bard now functions as an assistant within the Google Workspace apps, capable of writing and creating drafts in Gmail and Google Docs, creating tables on request in Google Sheets, creating images, audio, and video in Google Slides, creating images in Google Meet, and exporting messages from Bard to Gmail and Docs.

Furthermore, Google has brought Bard into a cross-platform collaboration with Adobe Firefly, Adobe's newly launched AI system for creating images from Prompts. In the future, users will be able to create images from Bard using the power of Adobe Firefly, directly competing with Open AI's Dall-E.

All of these are updates from Google that have transformed our work world. We'll have to wait and see what other features Google will develop in the future, so stay tuned for further announcements.
